Shanghai – The Political Drama Leaves A Huge Impact : The Review

Much acclaimed movie Shanghai has hit the cinema halls today. Shanghai is basically a political thriller where the viewers will witness a sensuous socialism and capitalism ideologies with a strong story line.

Though, this type of movie is not new to bollywood but the expertise of Dibakar Banerjee as a director has made the film at par from the traditional political drama making it worth to watch.

Shanghai has definitely taken the bollywood movie regime to a step further with its offbeat subject and excellent show of direction and acting.

Adapted from Vasilis Vasilikos’ novel Z, Shanghai is a story of small town Bharatnagar, where the ruling party proposes an upcoming infrastructure project ahead of the elections for the development of the town and wishes to make it another Shanghai, a dream city.

Then comes respected left wing socialist and activist, Dr Ali Ahmedi (Prosenjit Chatterjee), who is opposes this project, as hundreds of families will loose their shelter due to this project unwillingly.

At a really against the project, Ahmedi passes away and police names it a drunken accident. Ahmedi’s adherent Shalini (Kalki Koechlin) is known with the fact that this is a planned murder while Jogi (Emraan Hashmi), a local videographer claims to have evidence of the accident. High-ranking IAS officer, T.A. Krishnan (Abhay Deol) is appointed for the investigation of the murder mystery.

The investigation of Krishnan is being interrupted by his senior official (played by Farooq Sheikh), who insists Krishnan to close his investigation and name it a simple drunken ‘hit and run’ case to give a clean-chit.

Thus, you are going to watch a lot of social drama, ruthless and brutal politics and the realism of society that may change your insight towards many social aspects.

Both the male actors Abhay Deol and Emran Hashmi has played their roles of protagonists effectively and has been successful in embark a serious image in your mid. Kalki Koechlin is also quite satisfactory in her role. Abhay Deol once again has been successful in justyfing the role of IAS officer with his serious and sensuous acting. Emran Hashmi, as Jogi has done quite good job with his stained teeth and mawali moves.

Dibakar Banerjee, is quite impressive in portraying the real picture of the ugliness of the system in desi style and once again deserve an appraisal after Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Love Sex aur Dhokha.

So, Shanghai is a full package if you want to see something authentic, apart from the desi masala movie. Source
