Amrita Puri; How The ‘Blood Money’ Actress Came Into Bollywood?

There is an appreciable stubbornness in the personality of Amrita Puri that has got her this far in Bollywood without the benign hand of any godfather nor favoritism from any Bollywood big shot.

Being the daughter of a top banker, she dropped nothing short of a bombshell when she declared to her father her dream of becoming an actress. Expectedly, daddy dear didn’t approve. But Amrita waited and did not let her dream die. Finally, her stubbornness paid off and after two years of wait her dad capitulated to Amrita’s wishes. A nod came through, followed by a struggle for a break in Bollywood.

“I have spent a lot of time hopping from one audition to another…This phase is very difficult. I have a lot of respect for newcomers because you do need a lot of courage for this,” Amrita Puri is quoted as saying by a news agency.

All the struggle fructified with a break in the 2010 movie Aisha in which Amrita played a middle-class frump trying to find a toehold in the world of the rich. The performance won her a lot of nominations for Best Supporting Actress and a win (Stardust Awards) as well.

Thereafter, Amrita Puri was offered a slew of roles that required her to play second fiddle to the leading lady. Amrita turned down all of them. She wanted nothing less than leading roles. Stubbornness again!

After a long wait, a role came her way in Blood Money, slated to release this Friday. In the movie she plays the wife of Kunal Khemu, who, from humble beginnings in India, goes on to become a diamond trader in Cape Town.

Amrita Puri says her character in the film goes through a gamut of emotions. It was a challenging role and Amrita is confident that she would be appreciated.

Here we present you a few glimpses of Amrita Puri, who may not be a crowd-puller on par with Bollywood heroines, but has a talent to fall back on. For that she has our respect.
